What to Expect
What's Included
Runway for MS is one of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s premier fundraising events with a devoted group of supporters, who raised a record-breaking $240k at the 2021 virtual event. We are excited to continue this success in 2022 at our in-person event as we raise critical funds for those living with MS and highlight the strides we have made in research. The festive evening includes a cocktail reception, silent and live auctions and an inspiring program with an Annual Honoree Award Presentation, Mission Moment Speech and a highly anticipated fashion show. Each of our models have been affected by MS in different ways and this event honors their incredible journey.

Medical Honoree:
- Patricia K. Coyle, MD / Director, MS Comprehensive Care Center and Professor of Neurology, Stony Brook

Patricia K. Coyle, MD, FAAN, FANA, is Vice Chair (Clinical Affairs) and Professor of Neurology, as well as Director of the Stony Brook Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Comprehensive Care Center. She earned her medical degree and completed her residency in neurology at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD, where she also completed a fellowship in neuroimmunology and neurovirology. Her areas of expertise include MS, neuroimmunology, and neurologic infectious disease (in particular, Lyme disease).
Dr. Coyle has held multiple leadership positions at the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, the American Academy of Neurology, the American Neurological Association, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. She has served as an adviser to the FDA and the Institute of Medicine. Dr. Coyle has received research funding from the NIH and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, and is actively engaged in studies to understand and treat these diseases.

Theresa Ahlstrom is a partner at KPMG LLP with 40 years of professional accounting experience. Upon graduating summa cum laude from St. John’s University, Theresa joined Peat, Marwick, Mitchell & Co. In 1993, she was admitted to the partnership of KPMG Peat Marwick, becoming the first woman partner in a “Big Six” accounting firm on Long Island.
Theresa served audit clients for the majority of her career principally in the not-for-profit, healthcare, biotech, and consumer and industrial market industries. She has had numerous leadership roles over her KPMG career including Long Island Office Managing Partner, National Partner in Charge – Independence, National Advisory Risk Management Partner, SEC Reviewing Partner, Audit Professional Practice Partner, Primary Campus Recruiter, National Training Instructor, among others. Theresa also previously served on the firm’s U.S. Board of Directors and the Board of Trustees of The KPMG Foundation.
Theresa has been inducted into the Long Island Business Hall of Fame, YMCA Academy of Women Achievers and Long Island Business News’ Top 50 Women Hall of Fame. She was a recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree and the St. Catherine of Siena Medal from Molloy College, the Long Island Fund for Women and Girls Achievers Award, and the St. John’s University President’s Outstanding Alumni Achievement Award.
Throughout her career, Theresa has been very active in the Long Island business community and has served on the Board of Trustees/Directors of numerous charitable and community organizations including Molloy College, the Long Island Association, Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, National Multiple Sclerosis Society – LI Chapter, United Way of Long Island, Women Economic Developers of Long Island, and Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities (ACLD).
Theresa was also instrumental in bringing the Athena International Women’s Leadership Awards to Long Island that, together with her KPMG colleagues and executives from numerous prominent Long Island organizations, recognize and celebrate the accomplishments of experienced and emerging women leaders in our Long Island community. She currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Catholic Charities of Long Island and the Cleary School for the Deaf, as Trustee Emerita of Molloy College, the Audit Committee of Catholic Charities USA, and Board of Advisors of St. John’s University Tobin College of Business.
Theresa and her husband of 30 years, Bob, are also involved in several ministries in their parish, St. Elizabeth of Hungary in Melville, and the very proud parents of their sons, Timothy and Gregory.
- Diane Engelhardt / Director, KPMG

Diane Engelhardt is a Director in KPMG’s Independence Group (IG) within the firm’s Risk Management function. She has a diverse background performing audits in accordance with Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) standard and auditing private companies. She has served both internal and external clients in numerous roles throughout her 38-year career with KPMG.
Diane serves as a mentor to many individuals within the firm and as a performance management leader. Diane is also a member of the KPMG Network of Women (KNOW) Steering Committee for the Long Island Office and a member of the KPMG IG Culture Circles Steering Committee. Diane previously served as a National Instructor for Partner and Manager trainings, participated in the development of National trainings, led the Long Island Office Campus Recruiting and Staffing of engagements, and served as Co-Chair of KNOW.
Diane is involved in the Long Island business community and has served on committees for numerous charitable organizations. She actively engages employees to get involved and give back to the community through KPMG’s Family for Literacy, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the Interfaith Nutrition Network (The INN). Diane serves as a member of the Board of Trustees of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society - Greater New York City / Long Island Chapter, volunteers on the Annual Runway for MS Gala Committee since its inception, has been the MS Walk Team Captain for KPMG’s Long Island Office for over 30 years and serves on the Annual Luncheon Committee for the INN since 2019.

Mission Moment Speaker:
- Ronit Birns / Top MS Walk Long Island Fundraiser

Ronit Birns lives with MS and recently celebrated her team’s 20th year as participants in Walk MS Long Island. To date Team RoRoRo, led by Ronit and her husband David, has generated over $600,000 for the MS Society through team fundraising, corporate donations, recruitment of rookies and matching gifts; and they have achieved Top MS Walk Long Island fundraising status!
Ronit’s Walk MS Team and her overall MS fundraising efforts are truly a family affair. Each year she and David host a celebration after the Walk to thank their supporters that includes raffles and additional fundraising. The couple never underestimates the power of sending personal letters, as Ronit and David work with their two children, Jason and Emily, sending out personal thank you notes and letters to all of their donors and participants each and every year.
In 2021, David received the Equitable in Action Award, which is given to an Equitable advisor in recognition of outstanding philanthropic and community service. The award came with a grant of $10,000 in which the family chose to donate to the MS Society towards the 2021 Walk MS Long Island. David and Ronit are two of the Society’s greatest champions and truly exemplify the MS Mission.
