Honoree
Dr. John Schafer
John Schafer graduated from the University of Chicago Medical School and completed his neurology residency at the University of California, San Francisco. He is Founder and emeritus Director of the Mercy Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Center in Sacramento and founder of the MS Achievement Center. He practiced with Mercy Medical Group in Sacramento prior to his retirement in February 2021 after 45 years in practice. At Mercy MS Center his focus was on MS care through the entire spectrum of the disorder, from those with first attack and those with longstanding and sometimes more severe impairment.
He has been active in National MS Society since 1987 and has served on national committees since 1992. He was inducted into the NMSS National Volunteer Hall of Fame in 2013 and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Northern California Chapter in 2020. He has also served in other national MS organizations including Consortium of MS Centers, CanDo MS and Multiple Sclerosis Foundation.
Dr. Schafer has a longstanding interest in patient communications with special interest in health literacy and patient understanding and has been committed to optimizing the quality of life of those living with MS.
