Honoree
Hope Honoree: Dr. Rene Elkin
Dr. Rene Elkin began her BronxCare career in 1992 as a part-time Neurologist for a Neurology Division that was providing minimal consultation services at that time. She soon became a full-time Attending and, during the next 24 years, witnessed and contributed to its growth into a comprehensive clinical service.
As Chief, Division of Neurology, Dr. Elkin is directing its numerous programs and services. These include stroke treatments and care for migraine and other headache disorders, as well as epilepsy and neurological disorders. Dr. Elkin also serves as Director of the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Center at BronxCare, another specialty area of the Division of Neurology. This program is the only one in the Bronx recognized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
Dr. Elkin considers BronxCare’s 911 Designated Stroke Center as an important accomplishment. It addresses the serious consequences of stroke and, in many cases, is succeeding in reversing them, primarily because of new stroke medications and the expert and experienced staff in place. She is also proud of the prestigious Gold Plus Target and Stroke Honor Roll Recognition this program received from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association for excellence in care.
Originally from South Africa, Dr. Elkin trained and earned a medical degree at its University of Cape Town Medical School. Prior to immigrating to the United States, she completed a residency in Internal Medicine and Neurology and then a fellowship in Neuro-Immunology. Dr. Elkin was recently inducted into the National Multiple Sclerosis Society Health Professionals Hall of Fame for her dedicated efforts in caring for patients with Multiple Sclerosis at BronxCare’s Multiple Sclerosis Center. She is also proud of her selection by BronxCare’s medical residents as the “Best Teacher of the Year.”
